Professional Affairs: Karen Kama

Currently works for: the DOE (Leeward District Special Services) as a school-based SLP.

Looking forward to: learning new strategies and materials for teletherapy. What seemed overwhelming to learn ended up being fun and is engaging to my students. My current mantra is “be flexible and keep trying!”

Favorite local snack: Lilikoi shave ice from Wailua Shave ice on Kaua’i

Currently works for: Aegis Therapies for 3 SNF’s on Kauai (Garden Isle Rehabilitation and Health Center, Hale Kupuna Heritage Home, and Kauai Care Center)

Favorite Local Kine Food: Fresh Fruit! Mangoes, avocados, papayas, bananas.. anything and everything!! 🥭 🥑 🍌🍍

Currently works for: Department of Education for East Hawaii on Big Island.

Looking forward to: Making our website even more helpful, easy to navigate, and aesthetically pleasing. I am also looking forward to continuing to get to know our members. The more I talk to HSHA members, the more I am impressed and inspired by the work they do to contribute to our field.

Favorite local kine snack: My favorite way to snack is to plow through a pile of lychee!

Currently works for: EBS Healthcare as a school-based SLP in Hilo.

Looking forward to: Soaking up all of the knowledge from Eva and Kristina! Also using this platform to advocate for SLPs of color and marginalized communities we treat.

Favorite local kine food: definitely shave ice with mochi 😋

Currently works for: Aegis Therapies as Director Of Rehabilitation for 4 SNFs on Kauai and Big Island: Garden Isle Rehabilitation and Health Center, Hale Kupuna Heritage Home, Kauai Care Center, and Legacy of Hilo. (P.S: We have SLP openings on Kauai and Oahu )

Looking forward to: EVERYTHING! Seriously so excited for this year and really trying to make it fun and continue to build a great network for our association, especially the social hours where we can all meet and let loose together!!

Favorite local grinds: Definitely Loco Moco. It’s my comfort food!

Educational Affairs: Jamie Smith

Jamie is a licensed speech-language pathologist and founded her own practice, Thankfully Inspired, LLC, which provides SLP services both on Oahu and in California via telehealth. She is interested in your preferences about future educational opportunities!

Jamie's clinical interests include animal-assisted therapy, (Duke is her therapy dog in training), early intervention, language and literacy development, social cognitive skills and difficulties, executive functioning, and mindfulness. Her favorite therapy tools? Puppets and books.

Self-described, Jamie is passionate about learning and advocacy. When she’s not out swimming with her family, she’s finding creative ways to engage her clientele- she’s even got her own YouTube channel with Story Time and Mindfulness videos for kids!
